Tasty Time Savers
Throughout the years, Colman’s has been making condiments and casserole mixes that have enhanced pantries across the UK and around the world. Whether using a teaspoon of their mint sauce to liven up a salad dressing or making an Easy Shepherd’s Pie, Colman’s has you covered, when it comes to tasty time savers.
Founded in 1814 by Jeremiah Colman, Colman’s is one of the UK’s oldest brands. Colman’s was a family business that began in Norwich, England and mustard was the first item they produced. As the business became successful, Jeremiah Colman proved to be a pioneer of social welfare. In 1857 he opened a school for his employee’s children and later built housing for his workers.
Colman’s eye-catching products bear the now famous bull’s head logo which first appeared on Colmans Mustard packages in 1855 – a symbol representing both quality of the product and the tradition of the company.
From Mustard to Mint…
Growing up, my mum always kept a tin of Colman’s Mustard Powder in the pantry. From savoury scones and oatcakes to sausage rolls and stews, a dash of Colman’s Mustard Powder was often utilized. Their ready-made mustard is also a must and adds a nice tang to a warm sausage roll.
Another staple in our pantry growing up was Colman’s Mint Sauce. Whilst mint sauce is a perfect accompaniment for lamb dishes, it can be used in many other ways. With a malt vinegar base, Colman’s Mint Sauce can lift a salad dressing or add depth to various savoury dishes.
Meal Mixes & Sauces
Among the most popular of Colman’s products are their meal mixes, which, when combined with basic ingredients make for a tasty, fulfilling and nutritious meal. They offer a wide range of mixes – Beef Bourguignon, Cottage Pie, Shepherd’s Pie and Lamb Hot Pot, to name just a few.
Ready to use meal mixes can help create hearty and tasty meals for the whole family, especially for those in a hurry. Instructions on how to make the dish in a few easy steps are printed on the back of the package.
Easy Shepherd’s Pie
I recently got to work on a from-scratch Shepherds Pie recipe. I love from-scratch recipes and I am willing to spend hours in the kitchen creating what I feel is the tastiest dish. As I set out upon my Shepherd’s Pie adventure, I decided to do a Colman’s Shepherds Pie Mix version at the same time. Needless to say, the Colman’s version won hands down for ease but truth be told, the flavour that their version packed was hard to beat. The recipe on my blog is for Easy Shepherd’s Pie and utilizes a Colman’s mix! No shame at all!
In addition to their casserole mixes, they also make a wide range of pour-over sauces including Parsley Sauce (great with fish) Bread Sauce (an absolute MUST with Christmas Dinner), Cheese Sauce and Pepper Sauce. Why use pour-over sauces? They make a perfect accompaniment for a wide variety of meals and can take a potentially bland meal to the next level.
Colman’s is known for using quality ingredients and there is not anything in the ingredient lists that makes me shy away from their products. If you are pressed for time or just want an easy and tasty meal, keep some Colman’s products in your pantry for when the need arises!
Just like my mum used to, I always keep Colman’s Mustard Powder and Colman’s Mint Sauce in my pantry. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Speaking of apples, Colman’s also produces apple sauce! Colman’s products are more easily found these days outside of the U.K. and if you are in Victoria, British Columbia, be sure to check out Limey, The British Shop. They have a wonderful selection of Colman’s products, not to mention a shop that is full to the brim with tasty British goods!
